This is Cambodia

Cambodia is a small country in Southeast Asia, tucked between Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Most people know it for Angkor Wat, the massive temple complex that ended up on the national flags which honestly says a lot about how proud Cambodians are of it.

The country runs on a mix of tourism, garment exports, and agriculture, with rice being a big deal culturally and economically. The official currency is the riel, but US dollars are everywhere and most people just use both without thinking twice about it.

Phnom Penh is the capital and the busiest city. It sits at the meeting point of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, which gives it this whole river city energy. The city has grown fast over the last decade. New buildings, cafes, and startups are popping up while old French colonial architecture still lines some of the streets. Siem Reap is smaller but pulls in a massive number of visitors because of Angkor. Sihanoukville is on the coast and has a beach town vibe, though it has changed a lot in recent years.

The population is around 17 million, mostly Khmer. Theravada Buddhism shapes a lot of daily life here, from the temple routines to the festivals to how people interact with each other. History-wise, Cambodia went through a brutal period under the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. It left a deep mark on the country and its people. The country has been rebuilding since then, and the younger generation is very much forward-looking.
